Ms. Jeroo Billimoria, Founder and Executive Director :

“When children save a single coin, it does not represent more than what they carry in their pockets, but once they save a few more, it begins to represent something very different, a choice.”

Mission Vision & History

Our Vision

Aflatoun's dream is the reduction of poverty with the help of socially and financially empowered children. We believe that children should be taught to understand their rights and responsibilities and strive to ensure that child financial education is viewed as a right for every child across the globe.

Our Mission

"Inspiring children to socially and economically empower themselves to be agents of change in their own lives and for a more equitable world".

Our History

In November 2005, the Aflatoun network was formally launched in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and representatives from around the world committed to the Aflatoun concept. A global pilot involving ten more countries began, and today Aflatoun has increased its activities across the globe. We are currently in collaboration with over 85 countries and have distributed our work among our staff and network by region, Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and MENA.

In 2001, the first Child Social and Financial Education programme, MelJol, was implemented in Maharashtra, India. Due to MelJol's success, other countries from different global regions were approached to discuss whether a similar concept could bring the same benefits to their communities. Encouraged by the enthusiastic reaction of social entrepreneurs and NGOs around the world, Aflatoun was founded with the mission of bringing the CSFE to children and youth all over the world.
